I first made refried beans in the stovetop pressure cooker, and loved them! Fast forward a few years later, and now I make perfectly-seasoned refried beans in the Instant Pot!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When we took these photos, <a href=\"https:\/\/kalynskitchen.com\/2015\/01\/meet-kara-and-things-im-thinking-about.html\">Kara<\/a> and I loved sampling the beans, and kept commenting about how amazing the Instant Pot Refried Beans were! I ate the leftovers in bean burritos with low-carb tortillas and enjoyed every bite.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you&#8217;ve never made homemade from-scratch refried beans, I hope this will be the recipe that gets you to try it! I think that&#8217;s even more true about this recipe where beans are cooked in the Instant Pot, pressure-cooked a second time with onion, garlic, and chiles, and then fried.<\/p>\n<h2>What types of dried beans can be used for Instant Pot Refried Beans?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The pinto beans we used are traditional for Mexican refried beans, but use black beans if you prefer that option.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What size Instant Pot did I use for refried beans?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I use a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2uF2Tif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">6 Quart Instant Pot<\/a> (affiliate link) for all my Instant Pot Recipes. Use <a href=\"https:\/\/kalynskitchen.com\/p\/pressure-cooker.html\">Instant Pot<\/a>&nbsp;to see all my recipes for the Instant Pot!<\/p>\n<h2>Are the Instant Pot Refried Beans low in carbs?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Refried beans do have some carbs of course, but dried beans are quite high in fiber. So these beans have only 11 net carbs per serving, with 5 grams of protein. Or if you use the <strong>JUMP TO RECIPE<\/strong> link at the top of the page, it will take you directly to the complete recipe.)<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start with two cups of dried pinto beans; no need to soak them, although beans that have been on the shelf for a while will take a little longer to cook.<\/li>\n<li>Put beans in the Instant Pot and cover with water 2 inches above the beans. Add 1 T olive oil to slow cooker, then lock lid.<\/li>\n<li>Set Instant Pot to MANUAL, HIGH PRESSURE and 30 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>When 30 minutes is up, use QUICK RELEASE to release the pressure. (Be sure to add 5-10 minutes cooking time if your beans are old.)<\/li>\n<li>While the beans are cooking, chop the onion, mince garlic (or use Minced Garlic from a jar), and get the can of diced green chiles&nbsp;and salt ready.<\/li>\n<li>Add those ingredients to the cooked beans. Lock lid again, set Instant Pot to MANUAL, HIGH PRESSURE, and 10 minutes. Let the pressure release naturally.<\/li>\n<li>When the pressure has released, use <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2nHdoKC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an immersion blender<\/a> (affiliate link) or <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2nSXNqC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a food processor<\/a> (affiliate link) to puree the beans, making them as creamy or chunky as you prefer. pressure cooker with enough water to cover by about 2 inches.<\/li><li data-step-index=\"1\" id=\"mv_create_306_2\">Add 1 T olive oil to cooker, then lock lid, choose MANUAL SETTING and HIGH PRESSURE, and set time for 30 minutes. (Remember to add a few minutes if your beans are old.)<\/li><li data-step-index=\"2\" id=\"mv_create_306_3\">After 30 minutes, use QUICK RELEASE to release the pressure.<\/li><li data-step-index=\"3\" id=\"mv_create_306_4\">While beans cook, chop the onion, and prepare minced garlic and green chiles, and measure the salt.<\/li><li data-step-index=\"4\" id=\"mv_create_306_5\">Add those ingredients to the pressure cooker with the cooked beans.<\/li><li data-step-index=\"5\" id=\"mv_create_306_6\">Lock lid again and set to MANUAL, HIGH PRESSURE, and 10 minutes.<\/li><li data-step-index=\"6\" id=\"mv_create_306_7\">Let pressure release naturally when the time is up.<\/li><li data-step-index=\"7\" id=\"mv_create_306_8\">When pressure has released, remove lid and without draining, use\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2nHdoKC\" rel=\"noopener\">an immersion blender<\/a> (affiliate link) or <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2nSXNqC\" rel=\"noopener\">a food processor<\/a> (affiliate link) to puree the beans, being careful not to over-blend.<\/li><li data-step-index=\"8\" id=\"mv_create_306_9\">At this point, beans will definitely be more runny than you want, but I like the idea of keeping the flavor that\u2019s in the cooking water and excess liquid will cook off when the beans are fried.<\/li><li data-step-index=\"9\" id=\"mv_create_306_10\">Heat 2 T oil of your choice in a heavy, nonstick pan.<\/li><li data-step-index=\"10\" id=\"mv_create_306_11\">Add beans and simmer over low heat, stirring often, until beans have thickened to desired consistency.<\/li><li data-step-index=\"11\" id=\"mv_create_306_12\">For me this took about 10 minutes.<\/li><li data-step-index=\"12\" id=\"mv_create_306_13\">Serve the Instant Pot Refried Beans hot, topped with grated cheese and thinly sliced green onions if desired.<\/li><\/ol>\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"mv-create-notes mv-create-notes-slot-v2\">\n\t\t<h3 class=\"mv-create-notes-title mv-create-title-secondary\">Notes<\/h3>\n\t\t<div class=\"mv-create-notes-content\">\n\t\t\t<p><p>There&#x27;s no need to soak the beans, but beans that are fresher will cook more quickly.
